I strive to bring a whimsical light to my work, creating touches of humor and bringing a smile to the viewer while setting up a subtle scene, but I will occasionally turn these ideas on their head and create art meant to surprise. I am an illustrator who works in many different media: watercolor, photoshop, and graphite, using whatever medium seems appropriate for the ideas and concepts I have. Combining media is also something that comes naturally to me, and I particularly enjoy going back into traditional works through the computer to make enhancements where needed.
One such example of my work is a watercolor and digital series illustrating the Aesop fable, “The Fox and the Sick Lion”. The pieces feature bright and saturated colors within a naturalistic forest scene, painting a world that is both real and fantastical. My ultimate aim for the series was to tell the story in a simple, yet elegant manner, using the natural anatomy of animals to depict subtle emotion. As an extension of that subtlety, I did not strive for strict realism, but I also did not stylize the scene in an overtly cartoony manner.
In the future I plan to go further into the contrast of my work. It would feel strange to brand myself as purely whimsical or sinister, so bringing them together in a peculiar juxtaposition is a natural way to proceed. I hope to draw on the storytelling of contemporary illustrators like Ursula Vernon and Hillary Leutkemeyer to create pieces that invite the viewer into a pseudo-fantasy world.
